One of the questions I’m asked most often by brides is, “Do we really need to start that early?” The simple answer is yes! While an early alarm might not sound appealing on your wedding morning, there’s a very good reason why your Hair and Make-Up schedule begins when it does.
As bridal Hair and Make-Up artists, we’re not just calculating the time it takes to style each person. We’re also factoring in everything else that naturally happens on a wedding morning. Even the fastest and most experienced HMUA needs to allow for interruptions. Brides get asked endless questions by family, photographers, suppliers and the bridal party. You’ll want to stop for a drink, pop to the toilet, answer a quick question, or simply take a moment to breathe. These little pauses may only seem like a few minutes at a time, but they quickly add up.
I’ve been at weddings where the bride has simply been trying to eat her breakfast and, quite understandably, that has delayed the schedule by 10–15 minutes. It doesn’t sound like much, but once your timeline slips, it’s incredibly difficult to make that time back without everyone feeling rushed.
Bridesmaids can also unintentionally affect the schedule. It’s very common for someone to disappear to run an errand, collect flowers, greet suppliers or help with last-minute jobs, only to return late for their Hair or Make-Up appointment. Again, these delays have a knock-on effect for everyone else.
As a general guide, Hair and Make-Up each take around one hour per person. The bride will usually require a little longer, as every detail is perfected to ensure everything photographs beautifully and lasts from morning until the last dance.
It’s also important to think beyond your final Hair and Make-Up appointment. Ideally, you should be getting into your dress around one hour before your ceremony. This gives you time to put on your jewellery, shoes and veil, have those beautiful getting-ready photographs taken, enjoy a few special moments with your loved ones and simply pause before the excitement begins.
If you’re travelling to your ceremony, you’ll need to build that into the schedule too. For example, if your ceremony is at 2:00 pm and you’re getting ready somewhere that’s a 30-minute journey away, you’ll need to be completely ready by 12:30 pm. That hour before leaving disappears surprisingly quickly, and you’ll be so grateful not to be rushing out of the door.
That extra time also provides your HMUA with a small buffer. Weddings rarely run perfectly to schedule, and having a little flexibility means we can still deliver beautiful, polished results without anyone feeling stressed.
If an early start really isn’t for you, it’s worth considering having additional stylists. Depending on the size of your bridal party, you may benefit from two Hair stylists and two Make-Up artists, or perhaps one artist providing both Hair and Make-Up alongside separate Hair and Make-Up specialists. Having a larger team can significantly reduce the overall preparation time.
This is something to think about before finalising your bridal party. Will you be having several bridesmaids? Are your mum, mother-in-law or other family members also being styled in the morning? If so, will they be included in the main schedule, or would it be better for them to have a separate artist? These are conversations worth having early, as they can make a huge difference to your wedding morning timeline.
One misconception I often hear is that choosing a very natural Make-Up look means less time is needed. In reality, the opposite is often true. Creating flawless, minimal Make-Up that lasts all day requires multiple fine, lightweight layers and careful blending. It’s a skill that takes precision, not speed.
The same applies to Hair. A short blow-dry isn’t automatically a quick appointment, and creating an updo on fine hair can often take just as long as styling thick hair. Fine hair usually needs extra preparation, additional products and specialist techniques to create volume, texture and long-lasting hold.
Every bride is different, every wedding morning is different, and every timeline is carefully planned with experience behind it. Starting early isn’t about filling the morning with appointments, it’s about creating a calm, enjoyable atmosphere where you can soak up every moment without constantly watching the clock.
